Pool of Deep Thought                                                              (go to detail view)

‘Numerous modern studies have shown how healthy meditation can be, not only for the ‘spirit’ but for the beneficial physical effects.  It is interesting how this has been known for centuries in many cultures. (Zen gardens—yoga—koi ponds)

It seems that once the everyday conscious thought-static is calmed, the subconscious wisdom is able to surface.  Thus that ‘aha!’ moment — indicating that if we look deeply and quietly enough, we will see.’

Word received from clients that some are yoga students, and use this image as a focal point for their daily meditation.  I was most pleased to hear it—that is exactly how I ‘saw’ one layer of meaning for this piece.  When I composed the work, I explored repeating, overlapping, rotating, spiralling ‘golden sections’—the ancient design proportions that some early civilisations felt were spiritually inspired.

One customer, who was conversant in Feng Shui, counted the fish and remarked how lucky the numbers and colours were; I had painted them this way without realizing the significance.

In Canada, we are so lucky to have a rich tapestry of different cultural heritages, and the resulting strength and vibrancy that is provided by our diversity.

The original painting ‘Pool of Deep Thought’ is an oil, on panel, 16”x 24” (approx).
