The Roaring Game

‘Curling in Canada’s early days was an essential component of small community life, one which suited our landscape (and probably the Canadian psyche) well.  It is not surprising that we lead the world in this Olympic winter sport.

‘The courteous sport’ is an ancient one—from the 1700’s, there are tales of kilted Scots curling below the walls of old Quebec city.  In the early 1900’s, my father recalled his Western community becoming as ‘empty as a ghost town’ during bonspiels on the nearby river—everyone participated.  During the rest of the year, an eagle eye was kept on the fields and the river beds for ‘just the right rock’.

In the painting I tried to imagine how the early equipment might have looked (with many thanks to the wonderful Nelson BC ‘Touchstones’ Museum for preserving a sample of a curling rock from the time when our country was young).’
